Last year someone asked me if I had a Father’s Day song that could be sung in church. I didn’t, but I had already thought about writing one. I wanted to write a song that I could give to my Dad as a Father’s Day present. As I thought about it though, I realized that the song couldn’t just be about my dad. There are so many others that Father’s Day also includes.
I’m grateful for my husband, who is the Father of my children. He is a good man. I’m also grateful for the leaders in my church, for our bishop, wonderful home teachers, and teachers of my children. I’m surrounded by good men that have touched and blessed my life.
I also wanted to write a song for my Heavenly Father. This last month I have grown to appreciate him even more, as I realize how much he gives me. I’m grateful for how much he teaches me, and gives me experiences that help me to learn and grow. I’m thankful to know him, and to know of his love for me, and for all of His children. He is the Father of us all. He is perfect, and loving, and forgiving, and I’m so grateful for my knowledge of Him.
I finished the song only a day or two before Father’s Day last year. I didn’t make sheet music because there wasn’t enough time. I just made a simple recording to give to my dad. I played it for my husband, and I sent a copy of the MP3 to the women who requested the song. I apologized that she couldn’t use it for that Father’s Day, but I expressed my gratitude to her for helping me get it done.
A month ago, I was reminded by this same sister, about the song that I had written the previous year. I was grateful, and began writing out the sheet music for the song. At the same time, I had been picking music for our ward choir to sing and needed something we could sing for June. I wondered if I should write a choir arrangement.
After getting approval from our bishop, our ward choir has permission to sing it this Father’s Day. I’m excited! We started singing the parts today, and it sounds so pretty. I love to hear a song come to life by people singing it and playing it. It is actually a luxury that I don’t always have the opportunity to hear.
I feel incredibly blessed. You can download the sheet music, and view the lyrics here.
