It’s been awhile since I wrote and since that time life has taking me on some interesting adventures that I could neither have foreseen or predicted.
The other day I was talking with one of my sisters. She knew about some of my difficulties and struggles. She asked me how I was and I told her that some days were better than others, but for the most part I was doing okay.
She asked me, “Do you think Heavenly Father has a particular plan for each of us and that we have to get it just right or else we’ll fail?”
It was an interesting question and one that I’ve pondered about. I’d like to share my response to her question.
I told her that sometimes I like to sit at my piano and just play whatever melody comes to my mind. Sometimes when I hit a note that doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of what I’m playing, I can change the melody to incorporate the “wrong” note and turn it into something beautiful.
In pondering her question, I imagine that God does something similar except on a much larger, grander scale. I imagine that God does have a mental idea in mind for each one of his children. It is probably much bigger than our own plans for our lives. However He gives each of us agency to decide if we want to live His plan or do what we want. I’ve found that I’m much happier when I live the life that God has planned for me then the one I think will bring me my own view of happiness. However, it’s usually as I’ve made bad choices or “wrong” notes that I’ve come to learn this.
I believe that God is an amazing God and that with Jesus’ atonement in place, God can fix anything, even the biggest “wrong notes” that can be played. It’s true that while they are playing, it might sound really bad, especially if we’re focused on the negative, or if we just stop playing and don’t continue on, but the more I’ve come to trust God, the more I realize that God knows how to make bad notes sound good. When things go wrong in my life, often they are followed by some of the sweetest notes and experiences that bring me happiness and joy. I need to remember that when bad notes are playing. Maybe I’ll get to a point when instead of getting upset by the situation, I’ll be able to say, “Yippee, this must mean something good is going to happen!”
I’m not quite there yet, but maybe some day I will be. I just know that God is an amazing God. Someday I hope to be able to orchestrate a little more like Him. For now, I’ll just have to stick to one instrument at a time.
