My parents right now are serving as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are temple workers, working in the Nauvoo Illinois Temple. We went and visited this temple in 2010 when we went on our big trek across the country. (In this picture, we are actually eating some yummy fudge from the fudge shop right across the street from the temple.)
For Christmas, I made my parents a little plaque to put in their apartment. A handmade item to help them remember their mission. It had a scripture quote, as well as the words ”Nauvoo Illinios Temple Mission” written on it, with little stickers and such to decorate it. It was cute. I got the P.O. box from my parents and mailed it off.
A week or so later, my parents still hadn’t gotten the package. My friend that I had also sent a similar package to, had received hers, and I worried that there had been a problem with the mail. My parents spent Christmas with one of my sister’s families, and so I didn’t think about it, hoping that it would turn up later, when they returned.
This week I got a call from both of my parents. They thanked me for the Christmas present. In my haste to get the package mailed off, I had addressed it to the “Nauvoo Illinois Temple Mission”. I had forgotten to put my parent’s names on the package! The temple president had opened the package and had thought it was a gift for the temple. Perhaps they put my plaque up somewhere in the temple.
Now, a month and a half later, my dad said that the temple president had the inspiration to have the thought that maybe the plaque was actually a gift meant for one of the couple’s serving in the temple there. He brought it up at a meeting, and asked if any of the missionaries were familiar with a Lindy Kerby. My mother announced, “That’s my daughter!” They gave the plaque to my parents. Whoops!
When I asked my parents if they had also gotten the book that I had sent with it (It was Sheri Dew’s, “Saying it like it is” with lots of inspirational quotes and such), they didn’t know anything about that. Who knows where that ended up! Maybe it will have a story of it’s own!
