Last night for Relief Society, we had someone come and talk to us that had visited the people of Haiti. He shared with us many experiences and miracles that he had witnessed, visiting the country as a medic there for a couple weeks.
He showed us pictures of the devastation. It is horrible. He showed us pictures of how many of those people live. Many of them in tents made from sheets drawn over ropes or string. He said you couldn’t drink the water. Everything was littered and unclean.
He said that, for the most part, the people seemed happy. He said that there was a lot of hope and faith in God that seemed to abound. He especially enjoyed being with the children. They didn’t seem to know the difference in their situation, or just made the most of it. I wondered how it would feel to grow up there. I imagined I would be okay. As a child, I liked to imagine, and play with whatever I could find laying around, much as these children did.
But why? Why was I born to such a place of privelege, when there are so many people left almost destitute. I know that God loves them just as much as he loves me, but it makes me just really want to serve in whatever capacity I can. I’m not sure yet, what my purpose in life is, but I know there’s a lot I am able to do, just because of the country, and circumstances that God has place me in.
Last night, as part of our activity, we tied a quilt to donate. My fingers are still hurting from pulling the needle through the fabric. It seems a small price to pay.
