Today we visited Winter Quarters in Omaha, Nebraska. This was the place where the mormon pioneers had to settle during the winter. It was amazing to go into a little log cabin, about the size of our tent, and imagine 2 full size families living there. Kids slept in the loft above (tiny), and the couples were separated only by a small curtain. I just can’t imagine! Here, our younger kids got to dress up like pioneers and pull a handcart.
The movie there at the Visitor’s Center was especially touching. I really came away with a deeper appreciation for all those pioneers did in their efforts to get to the Salt Lake Valley- the place where I am enjoying living now!
The Winter Quarters Temple was right across the street from the Visitor’s Center, and it was neat to walk by it as we visited the cemetery where many of those pioneers were buried.
The rest of the day was spent traveling to Missouri. It was only about a 4 1/2 hour drive, but ended up taking longer because of a detour. The kids are starting to get a little tired of driving. Contentions were a little more loud today. Hopefully things will settle down a bit as we get into this rhythm of traveling.
