For my son’s 14th birthday, I gave my son a guitar song book and some CD’s to help him learn how to play his guitar. For fun, I learned right along with him. I had only learned previously how to play different chords on the guitar, but it was fun to learn how to play all the individual notes.
Lately my son has been too busy to play with me, and so I’ve “borrowed” his book and started learning on my own. Once I learned all the basic notes on each string, I pulled out my Primary Children’s Songbook, and one by one, started playing each melody from the beginning of the book. I’m on page 100 now!
Yesterday my mother-in-law was watching kids for me, and I played for over an hour! It was so much fun. It brought back a memory I had of when I was learning to play the piano.
My mother was the one that taught me to play. She showed me where each of the notes were by putting ‘letters’ on my piano keys. I read from a piano book that had actual ‘letters’ on the page, and I matched them up. It wasn’t long before I moved to learning real notes. It felt wonderful to play through songbooks and sight read and recognize the songs I played.
I think if I had been forced to play the music, I might not have enjoyed it so much, although I would probably be a more skilled and accomplished piano player than I am now.
Yesterday as I was playing the guitar, I remembered how it felt to play the piano those first times. I felt the same desire to learn, and had so much fun creating those melodies. It felt again like a skill that I was just re-discovering, though I hadn’t done it before. I wondered if it was possible that I might have learned to play instruments in the pre-existance. Maybe it was a skill that I already had, but for now have to re-learn.
It made me start to wonder if there are guitars and pianos in heaven. I’m certain there’s music. It wouldn’t be heaven without it. But music is created by so many different instruments and methods. I can only imagine what types of instruments there must be there.
Recently, I’ve done a lot of introspection about my life and how I grew up. I love to be in control and plan for the future. Unfortunately, I’ve learned you can’t control most things that happen in your life. Thankfully I do have a lot of control in what I do in my free time. It’s so important to take time to do something you enjoy.
I have a little bit more time now, I think I’ll play for a just a few more minutes…
