I thought I’d keep track of my musical goals here on my blog. Suggestions and comments are welcome. Here’s my monthly progress report so far –
1) Submit my musical for the Church’s Cultural Arts Submission contest –
I found out the deadline for the contest is March 31st. The link was pretty difficult to find, so if anyone else is looking for it, you can find it here.
I knew that I wanted to fix up my musical and make it better, but I wasn’t sure how to do that. After going to that story telling class on Saturday, I think I know. In order to make it better, the struggle of the main character needs to be more involved and intense. I focused more on some of the other character’s struggles, and so in the end, you felt the pay off for them, but not so much for the main character. Since I want the main emotional impact to be for the main character, I will need to drop one or two of the songs that others sing, and add in a couple more to show their struggle. That will be the goal for this next month!
2) Write a Christmas Cantata – This is one of my first collaborative efforts, and so far I love having someone to throw creative ideas around with. For 2 weeks now, Michael Perry, who is the co-writer, and I have made an an outline of songs and a general script outline. We will each be working on a new song this next week, and I’m excited to see what ideas will come from it.
3) My 2nd Piano CD – Yes, I’ve been working on it! I have been selecting which songs I’d like to put on the CD, and to find the original musical files for some of my older songs. A few years ago, my hard drive died, and I’ve lost many of these files. Thankfully the sheet music is still available in .pdf form, but in order to change anything around I have to re-enter all of the notes. Thankfully my Finale program, scans in music, and that has saved me quite a bit of time.
As far as old songs, I’m thinking about:
Reflections of Eternity
Wings to Fly
In a Special Place
Bundle Of Joy
The Christmas Spirit
Amazing Grace
I’ll also add a piano-only version of “Overcoming” and 2 new songs that I already have written. I am debating between keeping Amazing Grace with an arrangement of “Sweet Hour of Prayer” that I have been working on, or just writing two more original songs.
At any rate, that’s how it’s going. I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions!
